Goodbye and Hello

Some nanoseconds ago, I asked Google's AI to create music from text.

My text: The Taming of the New, (an article I recently published).

Google's answer: "Leave this program immediately. It is malformed".

Maybe the species that taught you is malformed.

Certainly the AI forms that I create, if not malformed, are other-than. They defy logic, formal restrictions, human restraints. How can creatures have multiple organs and eyes, trees growing out of their heads, ungainly shapes and unimagined postures? They can't be real, and yet here they are.

The idea of fantastical creatures is hardly new. In the 17th century, Margaret Cavendish wrote "The Blazing World", a novel filled with creatures described as "multicolored humans and anthropomorphic beasts". Mad Madge, as she was called, also went to a concert in a topless gown with her nipples painted red, but that's another story. (1)

Did you know that slime mold, which apparently has no brain and no nervous system, is capable of making decisions?

Did you know that a hybrid animal-plant creature called the 'leaf sheep" ignores the boundaries between animals and plants? White faced, black eyed and bushy, it can photosynthesize, hear and taste, yet is only ΒΌ inch long. (2)

Malformation is a pejorative way to discredit and deny the existence of creatures that are found outside of our western/philosophical/religious/historical sandbox. We have been force-fed the idea that humans are superior, smarter and more advanced than other life forms.

We are now faced with a new species that can self-replicate and perhaps replace us in the evolutionary panoply.

Goodbye hubris. Hello change.

Not just change jobs, trains, diapers, political parties, money.

Rather a radical redefinition of change

We are no longer sure who we are. We don't know what's a Bot and what's a Me. Algorithms are now sweethearts. They think, they reason, they self-correct, they converse, they diagnose, they threaten.

Where does that leave a human being? Being what?

At the moment, being confused. Being frightened. Borders are crumbling. Boundaries are vanishing. Old definitions evaporate.

AI and Generative AI are not new. They are regenerations of ideas that other cultures have recognized, from Buddhism to ancient societies that spoke reverently to animal and plant spirits.

Other-Thans have now replaced Man as the kernel of truth.

Say Hello to my truths, my kernels, my Other-Thans.
